Current threads together three short new commissions from leading Australian choreographers; Raghav Handa, Jenni Large and Azzam Mohamed, with the Australian premiere of Rafael Bonachela’s seminal work E2 7SD. Presented as a seamless, continuous experience, the works will form a compelling portrait of contemporary Australian dance: diverse in form, voice and perspective, yet united by curiosity and originality of expression.

Created in London in 2004, E2 7SD is the award-winning work that defined Bonachela’s signature choreographic style and put him on the world stage, winning over audiences and achieving critical acclaim. Never performed before in Australia, the celebration of being at our wharf home for 40 years feels like the perfect time to share this dynamic, high-energy duet.

Creating alongside Bonachela is Jenni Large, a New Breed alum and our 2026 Balnaves Artist in Residence, who creates work infused with hyper-design and apparatus, inspired by the personal, political and transformational forces of the body; Raghav Handa, our 2025 Balnaves Artist in Residence, whose work draws on the principles of Indian kathak to explore multifaceted expressions of contemporary Australian identity; and Azzam Mohamed, a Sydney-based Sudanese dancer, choreographer and educator, whose practice spans a rich blend of traditional cultural, street and club dance forms.

E2 7SD - Rafael Bonachela

Rafael Bonachela’s E2 7SD is a virtuosic duet based on two dancers’ personal diaries that attracted international recognition for Bonachela in 2004 and was awarded the inaugural prestigious Place Prize.

Jenni Large

Jenni is an independent dancer, teacher, and award-winning choreographer/director based in Northern Lutruwita/Tasmania. Driven by the personal, political, and transformative forces of embodiment, Jenni’s multi-limbed practice spans 15 years of dynamic experiences in independent and company environments.

She has performed extensively throughout Australia, Europe, the UK, NZ, the Americas, Japan and Singapore. Heavily influenced by aesthetics and cinematic tropes, Jenni’s choreographic work is both flamboyant and restrained, thematically analysing patriarchal systems and challenging stigma. In 2022, Jenni won the Keir Choreographic People’s Choice Award for her work Wet Hard, which she then extended into Wet Hard Long, premiering at Dancehouse in 2024, receiving a Green Room nomination for Most Outstanding Visual Design. She was honoured to receive a Chloe Munro Fellowship through Lucy Guerin Inc. and showcased her work at TMAG’s biennial exhibition in November 2025.

Raghav Handa

Raghav is a celebrated choreographer and dancer. Over the last decade, he has built a body of work focusing on the themes of power and exploitation from diverse perspectives. Central to his practice is a deep commitment to exploring new conceptual terrain with bravery, innovation, and cultural integrity. With theatrical flamboyance, he employs diverse artistic media to create worlds rich with surreal imagery and symbolism.

Raghav’s works have been commissioned by contemporary dance companies, festivals, art galleries and performance houses across Australia and Internationally.

Azzam Mohamed

Azzam Mohamed, originally from Sudan and now based on Gadigal Land, is a choreographer blending street, club, and African dance forms. His choreographic debut, Two Crews (2020), directed by Nick Power, premiered at Sydney and Adelaide Festivals, merging his Riddim Nation crew with Paris’ Lady Rocks.

In 2021 Azzam co-created The Risk of Hyperbole with Jack Prest, commissioned by Phoenix Central Park and supported by major Australian arts bodies. Their collaboration continued with MONUMENTAL (2022) at the Art Gallery of NSW and the Sydney Festival (2023).

Azzam’s recent works include GLAD (2023) for ReadyMade Works, Sculptured Riddims (2024) at Sydney Festival, and Echo Mapping, a duet with Prest.
