13 Rooms

11 — 21 April 2013

Overview

Sydney Dance Company partnered up with Kaldor Public Art Projects and US artists Jennifer Allora and Guillermo Calzadilla for the contemporary art exhibition 13 Rooms from 11-21 April 2013 at Pier 2/3 Walsh Bay. 13 Rooms is the 27th in the series of groundbreaking Kaldor Public Art Projects presented in Australia free-of-charge to the public. It brought together 13 artists from around the world, including iconic names like Damien Hirst, Marina Abramovic and John Baldessari, alongside some of the most celebrated young contemporary artists working today. More than 100 trained performers, including Sydney Dance Company, presented these artists’ works within purpose-built rooms inside Pier 2/3 over the 11-day exhibition.

For this special collaboration, our Company dancers featured in Allora and Calzadilla’s Revolving Door room. In Revolving Door, a group of dancers spontaneously form a line that goes from one end of a wall to the other, blocking the path in a similar fashion to a human barricade. The choreographed sequence of movements performed by the dancers can be seen to be drawn from political protests and military marches to chorus lines.
