Designed to reflect current and trending skills in contemporary dance, Sydney Dance Company’s Contemporary classes aim to expand your physical ability and freedom of movement. Through bio-mechanical exercises in the centre of the room, this class incorporates floorwork, traveling and choreographic phrases to give the participant a complete experience. Hip Hop
Hip Hop is a street style dance originating from the Bronx in New York City in the 1970s. Constantly evolving, it is a free, funky and soulful expression of movement used by artists such as Beyoncé, Kanye West, Justin Timberlake, Neo, Flo Rida and Rihanna. Jazz (and Jazz Workout) dance represents our popular culture and it is forever changing. Today, Jazz is influenced by pop music and can be seen in concerts and video clips for artists such as Kylie Minogue, Lady Gaga, Beyoncé and Britney Spears, and movies such as Fame and Step Up. JFH is a style performed by commercial dancers – a stylised combination of Jazz, Funk and Hip Hop! JFH routines are choreographed to the latest popular dance hit songs from Lady Gaga, Britney Spears, Beyoncé, Ciara, Usher, Justin Timberlake and more. A fusion of Latin dance styles, Funk and Hip Hop grooves offers a high intensity workout for all fitness levels. For those who enjoy Zumba, this cardio workout will inspire you with its non-stop movement. A Pilates mat class involves a series of exercises that teach body awareness. Many professional dancers complement their training with Pilates. Its focus on core stability, coordination, flexibility, holistic strength and mobility underpins their technique so they are able to dance freely and strongly. Pilates also cultivates an internal awareness which leads to better posture and confidence in your physicality.
Intro to Jazz — 5 Week Course
This Jazz class is especially for ages 55 and over! For those who have never danced, or it’s been a while, this course introduces you to the foundations of Jazz dance. Build strength and balance with exercises at the barre and work on travel and coordination as you follow simple steps across the floor. Learn a short Jazz routine to Broadway tunes and Jazz classics and build confidence through the duration of the course.
Starts Saturday 6 May, 11:45am–1:15pm.
Our Seniors class is especially for ages 55 and over. The classes consist of two weeks of Tap and then two weeks of Jazz on a rotating basis. The Tap class is with Tracey Wilson and the Jazz class is with Zac Jaffar. Please call 02 9258 4818 if you would like further information or a schedule emailed or posted out to you. The class costs $12.
Our yoga-based Stretch classes blend stretching movement with the graceful control of dance to tone and invigorate the body and release stress. The aim is to develop core strength, ease and openness in the joints and a flexible, well-balanced body. Yoga mats are provided or you can bring your own.

This performance style of Jazz was popularised to a large extent by Bob Fosse’s work, which is exemplified by Broadway shows such as Chicago, Cabaret and Sweet Charity. Combining elements of Hatha and Vinyasa yoga, this dynamic yoga class is designed to improve the flexibility, strength and focus of body and mind. With a strong focus on synchronising movement with breath and graceful transitions, the class has a fluid, dance-like nature.The perfect way to let the week go and start your weekend!

At Sydney Dance Company our Ballet classes are taught in the classical style using correct terminology and encourages artistry through disciplined and stylised movement. The class starts with a thorough warm up with exercises at the barre followed by work in the centre incorporating both slower combinations which focus on strength and balance and faster combinations focusing on stamina and the ability to remain light on your feet.
Beginner level is for those with limited dance experience who have a basic understanding of Ballet terminology. Level 1 is for dancers with 2-3 years of attending Ballet classes.
Some people like to attend the Beginner Ballet classes even though they are quite experienced. This could be because they wish to develop and refine their foundation technique. It could also be because the teacher or the timing suits them or they have an injury which means they need to take an easier class. However, the class will always be at the level advertised not aimed at the more experienced people in the studio.
We do not have a class specifically for dancers on pointe. However, you are able to wear your pointe shoes in Level 3 classes after consultation with the dance teacher.
You don’t have to wear ballet shoes. You can simply wear socks turned down at the heel so you have greater grip. You can purchase basic ballet shoes for $15 at the reception desk.
We do not have a dress code. However, we recommend having your hair off your face and wearing form-fitting clothing to enable the teacher to see the line of your movements.
Ballet contains a lot of bending and jumping. We recommend avoiding this style if you are experiencing joint pain or are recovering from a knee injury.
We always recommend starting at a Beginner level to ease yourself back into your practice and ensure you prevent any injuries. You can speak to your teacher any time about advancing to a higher level.
Contemporary

You can expect to do a really good a warm up and stretch, and then learn either a routine or phrases which will teach you technique and develop skills. In a Contemporary class, movement and choreography will be drawn from ballet technique along with other styles of dance, so each class and teacher will feel different. The music could be anything from classical to electronic.
Yes. Part of Contemporary dance involves floor work. You will be taught to do floor work safely but it can be challenging for people who have not done so before. If you are concerned please speak to your teacher.
Hip Hop

This allows you to ask questions and observe how specific movements are executed at a step by step pace. You will then learn a routine which will change from week to week.
Most classes teach a different routine every night. Some dance teachers teach the same routine over two classes but they will still teach the routine from the beginning each time.
Some of our Hip Hop teachers teach popping and/or locking in their classes. But we don’t offer technique classes specifically in Popping and Locking.
No, we don’t teach break dancing.

The Jazz Workout is a one hour class which starts with a warm up, stretch and core strength work. You will then be taught a short routine which will give you a high-intensity cardio workout.

A Lyrical class will start with a warm up and stretch. This will be followed by a focus on technique. The technique exercises will usually connect to the choreography that will be taught in the class. This enables students to ask questions and observe how specific movements are executed at a step by step pace. Many of the technique exercises will be progressions from the corner or centre of the room across the floor. You will learn a piece of choreography and run the routine a number of times.
As Lyrical is such an expressive dance style it can often mean dancers' movements are restricted. Splitting into groups allows each dancer to get the most range out of their movement.
Pilates
Age 16+
Level Suitable for all fitness levels
A Pilates mat class involves a series of exercises that teach body awareness. The benefits include improved coordination skills, strengthening of spinal muscles and core areas, improved flexibility, good posture and a flatter tummy. The class includes exercises on the mat and at the Ballet barre. Our Pilates classes only take 16 participants to ensure individual attention from the teacher.
We do not have reformers in our studio.
Pilates focuses on core strength and flexibility. Stretch is about encouraging flexibility and engaging all of the different muscle groups. Yoga creates a mind-body connection as well as a great all over body workout.
Yes, you will need to bring your own mat during this time.
Seniors Tap / Jazz
Age 55+
Level Suitable for all fitness levels

Our senior classes require no experience for the Jazz class. However, if you have never done any Tap before you may find the class quite challenging.
We understand that tap shoes are an investment. We suggest leather soled shoes ideally as an alternative with a slight heel if you are trying for the first time. Once you have decided to come regularly, we do recommend purchasing Tap shoes.
Yes, this class is for those over 55. People of all ages are very welcome to attend any of our other drop in dance classes.
Stretch

Similar to a Jazz class, Theatre Jazz has a rigorous warm up and progression sequences to improve or maintain technique, and then a routine will be taught which can vary between modern style musical theatre, iconic choreographers such as Bob Fosse and everything in between.
Jazz contains commercial choreography as seen in music videos whereas Theatre Jazz contains choreography that would appear in musicals.

At Sydney Dance Company our Ballet classes are taught in the classical style using correct terminology and encourages artistry through disciplined and stylised movement. The class starts with a thorough warm up with exercises at the barre followed by work in the centre incorporating both slower combinations which focus on strength and balance and faster combinations focusing on stamina and the ability to remain light on your feet.
Beginner level is for those with limited dance experience who have a basic understanding of Ballet terminology. Level 1 is for dancers with 2-3 years of attending Ballet classes.
Some people like to attend the Beginner Ballet classes even though they are quite experienced. This could be because they wish to develop and refine their foundation technique. It could also be because the teacher or the timing suits them or they have an injury which means they need to take an easier class. However, the class will always be at the level advertised not aimed at the more experienced people in the studio.
We do not have a class specifically for dancers on pointe. However, you are able to wear your pointe shoes in Level 3 classes after consultation with the dance teacher.
You don’t have to wear ballet shoes. You can simply wear socks turned down at the heel so you have greater grip. You can purchase basic ballet shoes for $15 at the reception desk.
We do not have a dress code. However, we recommend having your hair off your face and wearing form-fitting clothing to enable the teacher to see the line of your movements.
Ballet contains a lot of bending and jumping. We recommend avoiding this style if you are experiencing joint pain or are recovering from a knee injury.
We always recommend starting at a Beginner level to ease yourself back into your practice and ensure you prevent any injuries. You can speak to your teacher any time about advancing to a higher level.
Contemporary
Age 16+

Designed to reflect current and trending skills in contemporary dance, Sydney Dance Company’s Contemporary classes aim to expand your physical ability and freedom of movement. Through bio-mechanical exercises in the centre of the room, this class incorporates floorwork, traveling and choreographic phrases to give the participant a complete experience. You can expect to do a really good a warm up and stretch, and then learn either a routine or phrases which will teach you technique and develop skills. In a Contemporary class, movement and choreography will be drawn from ballet technique along with other styles of dance, so each class and teacher will feel different. The music could be anything from classical to electronic.
Yes. Part of Contemporary dance involves floor work. You will be taught to do floor work safely but it can be challenging for people who have not done so before. If you are concerned please speak to your teacher.
Hip Hop

Hip Hop
Hip Hop is a street style dance originating from the Bronx in New York City in the 1970s. Constantly evolving, it is a free, funky and soulful expression of movement used by artists such as Beyoncé, Justin Timberlake, Neo, Flo Rida and Rihanna. You can expect to do a really good warm up and stretch. You may do some exercises or combinations that develop Hip Hop technique. This allows you to ask questions and observe how specific movements are executed at a step by step pace. You will then learn a routine which will change from week to week.
Most classes teach a different routine every night. Some dance teachers teach the same routine over two classes but they will still teach the routine from the beginning each time.
Some of our Hip Hop teachers teach popping and/or locking in their classes. But we don’t offer technique classes specifically in Popping and Locking.
No, we don’t teach break dancing.
Jazz / Jazz Workout

Jazz dance represents our popular culture and it is forever changing. Today, Jazz is influenced by pop music and can be seen in concerts and video clips for artists such as Kylie Minogue, Lady Gaga, Beyoncé and Britney Spears, and movies such as Step Up. You can expect to do a really good warm up and stretch. You will do some core work to strengthen and tone. You may do some progressions across the room which help you develop your Jazz technique. This enables students to ask questions and observe how specific movements are executed at a step by step pace. You will then learn a routine which will change from week to week.
Progressions are breakdowns and lead-ups of complex steps that normally travel across the room. This allows the dancer to improve and gain confidence as they advance their technique.
Most classes teach a different routine every night. Some dance teachers teach the same routine over two classes but they will still teach the routine from the beginning each time.
The Jazz Workout is a one hour class which starts with a warm up, stretch and core strength work. You will then be taught a short routine which will give you a high-intensity cardio workout.

JFH

JFH is a style performed by commercial dancers – a stylised combination of Jazz, Funk and Hip Hop! JFH routines are choreographed to the latest popular dance hit songs from Lady Gaga, Britney Spears, Beyoncé, Ciara, Usher, Justin Timberlake and more. Jazz-Funk-Hip Hop.
JFH is a commercial dance style, similar to the kinds of dance you might see in a music video. Hip Hop is more focused on movement dynamics and styles, and can include techniques such as popping and locking.
Latin Funk

Level Workout
A fusion of Latin dance styles, Funk and Hip Hop grooves offers a high intensity workout for all fitness levels. For those who enjoy Zumba, this cardio workout will inspire you with its non-stop movement. Latin Funk is a fast paced one-hour class. The class consists of a series of different dance sequences influenced by Latin dance styles such as Salsa and Samba. It’s essentially non-stop so it's an excellent cardio workout.

Lyrical
Age 16+
Level Beginner, Level 2
Lyrical combines the techniques of Jazz and Classical Ballet. Lyrical is a slower, melodic and more expressive form of Jazz often to ballad music. Dancers gain fluidity of movement, grace and control. Click on More Information to see description of levels.
A Lyrical class will start with a warm up and stretch. This will be followed by a focus on technique. The technique exercises will usually connect to the choreography that will be taught in the class. This enables students to ask questions and observe how specific movements are executed at a step by step pace. Many of the technique exercises will be progressions from the corner or centre of the room across the floor. You will learn a piece of choreography and run the routine a number of times.
As Lyrical is such an expressive dance style it can often mean dancers' movements are restricted. Splitting into groups allows each dancer to get the most range out of their movement.
Pilates
Age 16+
Level Suitable for all fitness levels
A Pilates mat class involves a series of exercises that teach body awareness. The benefits include improved coordination skills, strengthening of spinal muscles and core areas, improved flexibility, good posture and a flatter tummy. The class includes exercises on the mat and at the Ballet barre. Our Pilates classes only take 16 participants to ensure individual attention from the teacher.
We do not have reformers in our studio.
Pilates focuses on core strength and flexibility. Stretch is about encouraging flexibility and engaging all of the different muscle groups. Yoga creates a mind-body connection as well as a great all over body workout.
Yes, you will need to bring your own mat during this time.
Seniors Tap / Jazz
Age 55+
Level Suitable for all fitness levels
Our Seniors class is especially for ages 55 and over. The classes consist of two weeks of Tap and then two weeks of Jazz on a rotating basis. The Tap class is with Tracey Wilson and the Jazz class is with Zac Jaffar. Please call 02 9258 4818 if you would like further information or a schedule emailed or posted out to you.
Our senior classes require no experience for the Jazz class. However, if you have never done any Tap before you may find the class quite challenging.
We understand that tap shoes are an investment. We suggest leather soled shoes ideally as an alternative with a slight heel if you are trying for the first time. Once you have decided to come regularly, we do recommend purchasing Tap shoes.
Yes, this class is for those over 55. People of all ages are very welcome to attend any of our other drop in dance classes.
Stretch
Age 16+
Level Suitable for all fitness levels
Our yoga-based Stretch classes blend stretching movement with the graceful control of dance to tone and invigorate the body and release stress. The aim is to develop core strength, ease and openness in the joints and a flexible, well-balanced body.
Yes, you will need to bring your own yoga mat during this time.

Tap

For aspiring Fred Astaires, Tap Dogs and Billy Elliots. A combination of old and modern Tap styles seen in musical theatre shows such as Tivoli, 42nd Street and Hot Shoe Shuffle. Click on More Information to see a description of levels.
You can expect to do a thorough warm up of your knees, ankles and feet. You will then do some combinations and progressions as you develop your Tap technique - this may be done at the barre or in the centre of the room.

Theatre Jazz
Age 16+
Level Beginner, Level 1, Level 2, Level 3
Jazz dance evolved on Broadway in the 1950s into the new, smooth style that is taught today and known as Theatre Jazz or Modern Jazz. This performance style of Jazz was popularised to a large extent by Bob Fosse’s work, which is exemplified by Broadway shows such as and Sweet Charity. Theatre Jazz is also used in large scale musicals today such as Fame, Wicked and Grease. Click on More Information to see a description of levels.
Similar to a Jazz class, Theatre Jazz has a rigorous warm up and progression sequences to improve or maintain technique, and then a routine will be taught which can vary between modern style musical theatre, iconic choreographers such as Bob Fosse and everything in between.
Jazz contains commercial choreography as seen in music videos whereas Theatre Jazz contains choreography that would appear in musicals.

Answers to common questions about classes at Sydney Dance Company.
What are Sydney Dance Company’s In-Studio Classes?
Sydney Dance Company offers dance and fitness classes, open to the public, for people aged 16 and over. The classes are for all levels, from beginners to professionals. Classes are offered seven days a week in the morning, evening and on weekends.
Do I need to make a booking or reserve a spot for an In-Studio Class?
There are currently 20 places available in each In-Studio class, so pre-booking your class online is essential in order to ensure your spot.
How does the waitlist work?
All of the current In-Studio classes have a waitlist. As a space in the class becomes available the first person on the waitlist will be bumped up. An email will be automatically sent to notify you. If you no longer want to take the class, please log into your account and cancel the class. If you do not do this and do not attend the class you will still be charged for the missed class. If you are a member, it will be treated as a missed class and your booking privileges may be suspended.
We recommend selecting TEXT for Reminders and Schedule changes in your Account Settings so you receive a text message and can accept your place in the class or decline that place via a reply text.
Why can’t I make recurring bookings for In-Studio classes?
Sydney Dance Company wants to allow fair access for people to secure a place in their chosen class, so while classes are capped it will not be possible to make a recurring booking.
Do you have memberships?
Yes we do! Our membership options are: In-Studio, Classes On Demand and All Access. More information can be found on our memberships page.
But you don’t have to be a member. You can pre-purchase a single class or FlexiPack (6 months) online and schedule your In-Studio classes in advance. FlexiPacks (6 months) can be used for any in-studio class.
Can I purchase classes online?
Yes! Classes can be purchased in our online store or by using the Sydney Dance Company App.
Please note that there are no refunds, exchanges or extensions of expiry date. All classes are non-transferable and may not be used by another person. Classes are valid for 6 months from the date of purchase. This 6 month period is inclusive of any public holidays or Christmas closures.
Do you have performances or concerts?
No. The In-Studio classes do not offer performance opportunities.
Do I need to check-in to Sydney Dance Company?
If you've pre-booked your class, please sign-in using the iPads at the front desk, or see a member of the Customer Service Team. If you haven't yet reserved your spot in class, please see a member of the Customer Service Team so they can sign you in.
If I buy a FlexiPack (6 months), can I share the classes with my partner or friend?
No. FlexiPacks (6 months) can only be used by one person and are non-transferable.
What if I am late for an In-Studio class?
Students will not be admitted into class 15 minutes after the class start time. This is to ensure proper warm-up, reduce injuries and maintain class etiquette. We advise arriving at the studios 10 minutes prior to your class.
How old do I have to be to take class?
You must be 16 years or older to take any Adult dance class at Sydney Dance Company. Unfortunately, there are no exceptions to this rule.
What do I wear?
There is no strict dress code. Simply wear clothes you feel comfortable exercising in. Each dance style requires slightly different footwear and clothing.
What if I can't attend a class I have booked?
As long as you cancel at least four hours before the class begins, there is no penalty and the class will be credited to your account. If you cancel within four hours of the start time, Flexipack holders will forfeit the class. Members will have their online booking privileges suspended for 2 weeks if they miss 2 classes.
Do I need to be double vaccinated to attend an In-Studio class?
No. As of 11 March 2022, proof of vaccination (or medical exemption) is no longer required to enter the Wharf Studios.
What do I do if I have any of the following symptoms: cough, fever, sore throat, shortness of breath or have been in contact with another person who has recently tested positive for COVID-19?
Please do not come to the Studios. Get tested, wait for a negative result and adhere to any self-isolation guidelines from the NSW Government before you return to the Studios.
What cleaning is taking place at the Studio?
Sydney Dance Company has implemented an increased cleaning regime. Studios are cleaned with hospital grade disinfectant, as well as additional cleaning of every studio in between each class. All touch points are cleaned with hospital grade disinfectant on a regular basis.
What hygiene measures are available to me?
Hand sanitiser is available at the entrance to the building and at every studio door.
What training has your staff undertaken?
All of our staff (teachers and customer service team) have completed the Australian Government Department of Health COVID-19 Infection Control Training. In addition, our Customer Service team has completed a Studio induction and hygiene procedure training.
Do you have terms or start dates?
Our In-Studio classes run continuously throughout the year. We don’t have terms or start dates, so you can join in anytime! Different routines are taught each week, so that new students are not left behind. However, we do offer Intro Short Courses at the Wharf Studios which run for four or eight weeks.
How do I know if a class is right for me?
Each class specifies a level indicating its relative difficulty. If you are concerned about the level, please begin with a lower level class and then try a higher level class the next time, if appropriate.
How long will it take me to progress to a higher level?
This is a difficult question to answer because everyone is different. If you are feeling confident about the level you are currently taking and don’t find it challenging enough, then please have a chat with the teacher after class and ask them if you could potentially try a higher level class.
What is the average age of students in the class?
The majority of students in class are aged in their 20s and 30s, however all ages attend, from 16 to 70!
Do you have classes for older people?
We offer Jazz & Tap classes for ages 55+ on Thursdays at 12.30pm. All classes offered by Sydney Dance Company are suitable for mature age dancers. Please call our office on 02 9258 4818 for a recommendation.

What is included in a membership?

Do you have change rooms and showers?
We have newly refurbished change rooms and showers at the Wharf Studios, however due to limited capacity and COVID-19 safety, we ask you to come dressed and ready for class if you can.
What are your studios like?
Our five studios have all been refurbished with new flooring, state of the art technology and improved heating and ventilation.
What do I do with my belongings during class time?
Please take your bags into the Studio with you and place them around the edges of the room to ensure social distancing.
Do you have a lost property?
Sydney Dance Company will not hold on to any lost property. Anything left behind will be thrown out so please make sure you have all your belongings with you before you leave the building.
