Choreographic Development and Performance Accredited Short Course – Applications close 24 June

Join this residency and be a part of a one-week choreographic development that culminates in a performance for friends and family.  

Drawing from personalised movement ideas, you will actively contribute to the dance-making process together with a skilled choreographer and dramaturge. By delving into the intricacies of collaborating within a choreographic development and staging a group performance, you will gain invaluable insights into the creative process from conception through to presentation. Family and friends are invited to witness your efforts during a performance of up to 1 hour in Sydney Dance Company’s Neilson Studio on Friday 12 July at 6pm. This course offers a transformative experience to explore choreographic practices in a professional and supported environment. 

This accredited short course is tailored to dance students and professionals who have previously had experience in choreographic development.  

Upon completion of the Choreographic Development and Performance Accredited Short Course, participants will receive a nationally recognized Statement of Attainment for the following unit of competency. 

CUACHR511 Create and perform complex dance pieces      

EOI essential. If you are new to the choreographic process, we recommend taking the Choreographic Practice Accredited Short Course prior to applying for this course.

Mornings will begin with warm up, along with practicing and processing the contextualised information integrated into this session, led by Sydney Dance Company’s Training staff. Afternoons will be facilitated by practicing industry professional to unpack, investigate and develop movement to create choreography.

While the majority of these units are achieved through practical learning in the Studios, a small component of the course is academic based learning. This will be completed through Sydney Dance Company’s online Learning Management System, here participants can access resources and other content to support their learnings.

Yes! This course will dive into a one week development that guides you through the collaborative process of choreography.

Dance on Film Accredited Short Course – Applications close 15 July

Led by dance and film specialists, this immersive course delves into the art of choreography for the camera, exploring camera work, the dancing body and its impact on choreography.  

Whether you’re a dance enthusiast, aspiring artist, or simply curious about creative movement for film, this accredited short course will develop your skills and understanding of a variety of camera movements and positionings to capture the dancing body. Over six sessions participants will explore choreography for film and develop editing techniques to enhance choreographic vision for dance on film. The workshops will culminate in the creation of a short filmic product to share in the final week at an in-house film screening for friends and family.   

On the completion of this Dance on Film Accredited Short Course, a nationally recognised Statement of Attainment for the following unit of competencies will be awarded.   

CUACHR611 Create choreography for stage and screen 

You will be required to bring your own camera device (smart phones are appropriate) to film your movement and a computer with an editing application. We recommend downloading free software for basic editing, such as iMovie, Clipchamp, or Davinci Resolvecut. Alternatively, Premiere and Final Cut are more sophisticated apps, although these have subscription costs. Technical support will be offered.

The specialised Choreographic Practice Accredited Short Course offers learners a diverse range of choreographic tools to support their dance-making and creative practices. Across a period of five days, participants will meet with influential choreographers and choreographic educators to explore various tools, techniques, methods, and processes for creating original solo works.   

This accredited course is suitable for dance students and professionals with an interest in developing their choreographic practice, as well as performing arts teachers working in creative industries or education wishing to expand their skillset.  

On the successful completion of the Choreographic Practice Accredited Short Course, a nationally recognised Statement of Attainment for the following unit of competency will be awarded: 

CUACHR413 Develop choreography skills

Sydney Dance Company is delivering this nationally accredited unit of competency as a Registered Training Organisation (RTO #45863). 

Sydney Dance Company invites tertiary dance students, graduates and professional dancers aged 16+ to apply for this valuable opportunity with Australia’s leading contemporary dance company. Dancers with a desire to extend their training in a professional contemporary dance environment are encouraged to apply.

Movement Mastery Accredited Short Course – Dates TBC

The Movement Mastery Accredited Short Course is a comprehensive program covering a wide array of movement techniques and body awareness philosophies led by expert dance educators, choreographers, and movement specialists. 

Over the duration of the course the participants will explore improvisation techniques, somatic self-observation processes, kinaesthetic principles, and mindful movement concepts, facilitating a deeper understanding of deliberate action in movement. Over ten sessions, participants gradually deepen their understanding, layering their knowledge and skills to master dance movement from a perspective informed by anatomy, physiology and psychology.  

This course is suitable for all levels and individuals wishing to expand their approach to movement practices.   

On the successful completion of the Movement Mastery Accredited Short Course, participants will receive a nationally recognised Statement of Attainment for the following unit of competency.

Through real-world funding application templates and first-hand experiences, our educators and guest speakers, including accomplished independent choreographers and current peer assessors, will demystify the application process from various angles. 

From understanding the industry and the funding support available at local, state, and federal levels, to delving into foundation fellowships and a diverse range of application scenarios this course equips you with the knowledge and confidence to pursue funding opportunities with clarity and purpose. During the course you will explore the nuances of how applications are assessed, unravel the criteria that shape successful proposals and get a behind-the-scenes look into the discussions that unfold during peer assessment processes. 

On the completion of Fund Your Next Project Accredited Short Course, a nationally recognised Statement of Attainment for the following unit of competencies will be awarded.
