Pre-Professional Year: A Day in the Life

published

17 May 2023

Pre-Professional Year (PPY) students train at Sydney Dance Company’s Wharf Studios on the harbour from 9am – 5pm, Monday to Friday. There are four terms per year, which follow the same structure as the NSW public school holidays.

Every day, students will take technique and conditioning classes and participate in workshops, lectures and choreographic developments. Students will learn from PPY teaching staff as well as over 50 industry specialists, choreographers and artists each year. When the Company are in residence, Artistic Director Rafael Bonachela and members of Sydney Dance Company’s professional ensemble will also deliver classes, workshops and repertoire.

Learning is always delivered through highly practical sessions which allow students to develop their technique, performance skills and artistic practice.

Here is an example of what two typical days might look like:

12.30pm – 1.30pm – Grab lunch from the café and enjoy some sunshine on the Wharf

1.30pm – 4.30pm – Contemporary technique and Repertoire with Juliette Barton
