Into the Archives: A History of 2 One Another

Rafael Bonachela‘s international masterpiece, 2 One Another, is returning to Sydney this October in celebration of its monumental 100th performance.

This award-winning production first premiered in Sydney in March 2012. It was created over three months with Sydney Dance Company’s 16 dancers (see original cast here) and has been performed in 9 countries and over 30 cities around the world including the USA, South America, Europe, New Zealand and across Australia.

In a ‘behind the scenes’ video from the original production in 2012, Rafael explains how the creation of this extraordinary work came about. Starting with a blank canvas, he explores until he begins to see a path unveiling itself before him, adding layers, textures, connections, relations, added to bodies, to one another.

The title 2 One Another suggests these themes, and has been interpreted and explored in three ways:

How we relate to one another

The couple (two), the individual (one)and the group (another)

The progression of the work takes uson a journey from one world to another

In the creation of new works, Rafael has often used resources such as images, books and maps to spark ideas within his creative process but in the making of 2 One Another his inspiration comes directly from the studio; from the interactions and responses of the dancers and from the output of his collaborators. It is a personal work for everyone involved, intimately revealing personalities and qualities of the individual.
