Join in the fun at Sydney Dance Company this Winter and develop skills in a range of dance styles. For boys and girls, from the beginner to experienced dancer, Sydney Dance Company workshops are a great way for young people to improve their dance technique and learn new routines taught by Sydney’s best teachers and choreographers.

Located at Sydney Dance Company’s Ultimo Studios, Mount St Benedict College in Pennant Hills, Studio A in Menai and The Joan Sutherland Performing Arts Centre in Penrith.

Sydney Dance Company school holiday workshops provide an exciting and focused environment for young people to improve their dance technique and learn new routines under the direction of professional teachers and choreographers. Workshops for both beginner and experienced dancers are held at Sydney Dance Company’s Ultimo studios, Mount St Benedict College in Pennant Hills, Studio A in Menai and The Joan Sutherland Performing Arts Centre.

Beginner Dance Workshop (for 5-7 years)
Explore dance in this 1.5 hour workshop for the beginner dancer. Children will learn about Contemporary dance whilst engaging in fun, physical activity. Through structured exercises children are encouraged to create original movement that will develop their imaginations and inspire creativity.

Beginner Dance Workshop (for 8 to 11 years)
Beginner dance gives you the opportunity to try different styles and discover your own grooves and rhythm. Start with Hip Hop – a fun way to build confidence and learn new technique.  In a Contemporary class you will participate in different exercises which encourage original movement to ignite your creativity and imagination.  In the final class you will learn a simple routine from a popular Musical Theatre piece.

Beginner Dance Workshop (for 12 to 15 years)
This 3-hour beginner dance workshop gives the novice dancer an opportunity to try a Contemporary and Jazz dance class.  Participate in a variety of engaging exercises in a Contemporary class which encourage original movement and then learn a fun, high energy Jazz routine.

Contemporary, Lyrical, Hip Hop and Theatre Jazz (3 days for 10-11s)
Over three fun filled and challenging days, explore four dynamic dance styles. Each session participate in an intensive warm up and learn an original routine taught by our expert dance teachers. Enhance flexibility and movement in a Lyrical class as you learn about expressive movement.  Learn inventive, high energy Hip Hop and Street Dance routines. Participate in a special free style Hip Hop session where students generate their own grooves in a creative composition task. Develop performance skills in a Theatre Jazz class as you learn a routine from musical theatre and practice your Jazz Technique as you focus on progressions, kicks and turns. In your last class of the day explore Contemporary dance as you discover your natural movement and develop your own personal interpretation and self-expression in an Improvisation session. 

Contemporary, Lyrical, Jazz and Hip Hop
Over two fun filled and challenging days, explore four dynamic dance styles. Each session participate in an intensive warm up and learn an original routine taught by our expert dance teachers. Enhance flexibility and movement in a Lyrical class as you learn about expressive movement.  Explore Contemporary dance as you discover your natural movement and develop your own personal interpretation and self-expression.   Burn the floor in a Jazz class as you practice technique and movement combinations. And learn inventive, high energy Hip Hop and Street Dance routines.  Share a routine with family and friends at the end of the two days.

Contemporary, Lyrical, JFH and Theatre Jazz (at The Joan)
Over two fun filled and challenging days, explore four dynamic dance styles. Each session participate in an intensive warm up and learn an original routine taught by our expert dance teachers. Enhance flexibility and movement in a Lyrical class as you learn about expressive movement.  Appreciate Contemporary dance and its unique approach to movement and individuality.  Learn choreography similar to those seen in popular dance videos in a JFH (Jazz, Funk and Hip Hop) class. Then showcase your performance skills in a Theatre Jazz class as you learn a routine from musical theatre.

Contemporary and Lyrical Extended (for 12-14s)
In addition to learning contemporary and lyrical choreography, explore creative task work and improvisation exercises that the Sydney Dance Company use when creating original work. Students will learn a range of techniques and various approaches to developing their own movement.  Work creatively with other dancers, creating dynamic, personal and original work to share with family and friends at the end of the workshop.

PPY Masterclass (for 13-17 years)
Sydney Dance Company’s intensive masterclass for experienced dance students will provide an insight into the full-time Pre-Professional Year course. Experience a Ballet and Contemporary technique class followed by a session focusing on creative task work and improvisation. In the final class learn Sydney Dance Company repertoire choreographed by Rafael Bonachela.

Winter Intensive (for 15-18s)
Designed to challenge, extend and develop the technical and artistic skills of intermediate-advanced dancers. Dancers accepted into the course will work through technique classes, creative and improvisation tasks and Sydney Dance Company repertoire, led by industry professionals. The Intensive will culminate in a Q&A with industry specialists and an informal in-studio showing for family & friends.

Dancers looking to extend their contemporary dance training, interested in auditioning for Sydney Dance Company’s pre-professional year (PPY) or other full time programs, or auditioning for contemporary companies in the future are encouraged to apply.

Involvement in the Sydney Dance Company Youth Intensive is by application only. Applicants should be enrolled in secondary school while training at a local dance studio or a fulltime dance instruction. It is recommended applicants are participating in a minimum of 4 hours a week of dance training in ballet, jazz or contemporary.

Who are the workshops for?
Sydney Dance Company holiday courses are for young dancers with some experience except for the Beginner Dance workshop and Boys Only Hip Hop. The majority of our students have been participating in dance classes for at least one year.   Please book the course appropriate to your age group.

What do I wear?
Wear casual dance wear, something that you already have and feel comfortable in eg. dance tights and top, leotard and tights with skirt or shorts over the top, track pants and t-shirt/singlet top. For Jazz and Hip Hop bring jazz shoes or sneakers and for Contemporary and Lyrical bring ballet flats or cotton socks, you can also dance bare foot.

What do I bring?
Please bring your own lunch, snacks and drinks. Students with any allergies should take appropriate precautions. Take your bags into the studio with you and leave valuables at home.

Sydney Dance Company is located at 385 Wattle Street, Ultimo. Click here for public transport and parking information.

Mount St Benedict College is located at 449C Pennant Hills Road, Pennant Hills.  The workshops are held in the Hildegard Centre for Creative and Performing Arts. Click here for more information.

Studio A is located at 11/778 Old Illawarra Road, Menai. There is parking available within the compound.

The Joan Sutherland Performing Arts Centre is located at 597 High Street, Penrith (next to the Penrith Plaza shopping centre and Penrith Library). From the M4 motorway take the Mulgoa Road turn-off to Penrith. Fast train services leave regularly for Penrith from the country train platforms at Central Station.

Village AMPA is located at 4/85 O’Riordan St Alexandria.

How do I enrol?

Please enrol online by clicking the Book Now button. Parents/Guardians will be asked to create an account for themselves, once created, create an account for each child you wish to enrol. Enrol in the selected course and then checkout. If you wish to enrol multiple children or purchase multiple workshops, click again to add another class/child before checking out.

What is the cancellation policy?
We do not provide refunds or credits for change of mind or other personal circumstances. We can provide a credit note if the cancellation is due to a medical reason and a medical certificate is provided.

Child Safe Environment
Sydney Dance Company is committed to providing a safe and secure environment for children and young people. The welfare of children and young people participating in our programs is of the highest priority and we foster practices to support children’s health and confidence.

Students will be supervised by our Teachers and Class Assistants at all times including breaks. Please ensure that students are collected on time after the final class. Children under the age of 12 must be collected by a parent or guardian at the end of the day. Please ensure you are on time to collect your child. If you are running late please call our office on 9258 4818.

All Teachers and Assistants at Sydney Dance Company have a valid Working With Children Check and are aware of their obligations under the Commission for Children and Young People Act 1998.

Sydney Dance Company teachers and choreographers are highly experienced industry professionals with a passion for teaching young people.

Many have performed with professional dance companies including Sydney Dance Company, The Australian Ballet, and West Australian Ballet. You may recognise some teachers from national musical theatre tours and television shows such as So You Think You Can Dance, Dancing with the Stars and X-Factor.

Sharing their expertise and unique style, teachers along with our class assistants will provide support and guidance to all students. All our teaching staff have a valid Working With Children Check.
