About Us

Wharf Transformation

The world-class revitalisation of our historic home at Wharf 4/5 is complete and we’ve moved back in!

Sydney Dance Company has created the home of contemporary dance in Australia. Part of the landmark redevelopment of the Walsh Bay Arts Precinct by the NSW Government, our Wharf Studios have been refreshed and rejuvenated.

Overview

Sydney Dance Company moved into the Wharf Studios in 1986. A unique space, hewn from Sydney’s industrial heritage, our studios have been home to generations of renowned dancers and the foundation of performances that have brought world-wide acclaim for Australian culture. Over the years, we have taught hundreds of thousands of people to dance in our studios. The quirky, historic Wharf has become synonymous with Sydney Dance Company.

As part of the NSW Government’s landmark Walsh Bay Arts Precinct, the transformation of our home began in 2018. This significant reconfiguration and refurbishment is our first major upgrade, and has created an environment which meets the needs of both our exceptional dancers and enthusiastic, committed dance class patrons.

Our facilities on Wharf 4/5 have undergone significant renovations. When you visit our refurbished Studios, your experience will be greatly enhanced. Our four existing dance studios have been upgraded, a new studio has been built and the public facilities and administration suite have been improved.

As part of the Walsh Bay Arts Precinct project, the NSW Government has made a major financial commitment to support the renovations. Sydney Dance Company has raised $8M to match this funding and to ensure that the new facilities are exceptional.

You can make a tax deductible contribution to support the Wharf redevelopment by calling Michelle Boyle, Head of Philanthropy on 02 9258 4829.

Yes! Our dance classes will be back in full swing at The Wharf on Monday 4 January. With a new expanded summer timetable, new changing facilities and incredible refurbished studios, your dance experience will be better than ever.

You can apply for our Youth Ensemble, an extension program for dancers aged 12-15 and 15-18, delivered in Terms, 1,2 & 3 in 2021.

Our season performances will continue as normal at the Roslyn Packer Theatre Walsh Bay on Hickson Road, and our New Breed season will be presented in December at Carriageworks.
