Biography

Before his recent retirement, Stephen Emmerson was on the full-time staff at the Queensland Conservatorium for several decades and he currently continues there as an adjunct professor.

As a student, he studied piano at the University of Queensland with Pamela Page and later with Peter Wallfisch in London. He has Master’s and Doctoral degrees from Oxford University. He has maintained a busy career as pianist and chamber musician for many years, having performed widely in concerts and festivals around Australia, New Zealand, Europe and Asia. In addition to solo performances, he has performed widely with many of Australia’s leading classical musicians.  He has been a member of various chamber ensembles notably including the Griffith Trio (an Ensemble-in-Residence at the Queensland Conservatorium for over a decade), Dean–Emmerson–Dean, The Lunaire Collective and the Endeavour Trio. He has performed frequently in a range of piano duo programmes with Sonya Lilfschitz since 2012.

Recordings of his playing in collaboration with a variety of performers have been released by ABC Classics, Move Records, The Anthology of Australian Music on Disc, CPO, Tall Poppies, Contact and Melba.
