Shian Law
Shian Law is an Australian performance artist. He received formal training in dance at the Victorian College of the Arts and regularly works as a performer, choreographer, collaborator and dramaturge in dance, live art intervention and trans-media performance.
Law’s multi-faceted conceptual projects are the result of an adept practice spanning several artistic disciplines, including choreography, spatial practice, participatory art and screen-based art. Through his collaborative practice with a core artistic team, Law’s work utilises hybrid forms and new discursive frameworks wherein the representation of body and the way we experience dance are investigated. Grandeur, intimacy, spectatorship and historicity are recurring motifs.
Law has worked closely with choreographers/mentors Jo Lloyd, Phillip Adams, Deanne Butterworth, Mikala Dwyer, Brooke Amity Stamp, Lara Thoms and Liz Dunn. He was named ‘Dancer to Watch’ in Dance Australia 2011 and received numerous commendations for his earlier works. He performs extensively in festivals such as Melbourne Festival, International Symposium for Electronic Art, Dance Massive, World Theatre Festival, Next Wave Festival, APAM, Adhocracy and Salamanca Moves. In 2015, Law received the support of Tanja Liedtke Foundation to work in Berlin for a three-month research residency. He has also undertaken a research residency at Cité International Des Arte and Menagérie De Verre with the support of the Australia Council for the Arts. Law is the inaugural artist under the stewardship of Phillip Adams’ BalletLab and will premiere his new work ‘Vanishing Point’ in Dance Massive Festival 2016.
Sydney Dance Company commissioned Shian as a choreographer for our New Breed season in December 2016.
