Interview with Petros Treklis

Company dancer Petros Treklis will feature in the world premiere of Rafael BonachelaOcho as part of the extraordinary double bill Orb.

In this blog, he offers his thoughts on collaborating with Raf and the unique strengths of Australian dancers.

Creating new work with Rafael Bonachela is always very interesting. We normally discuss his stimulus at first. If the piece is driven by music that inspires him, we’ll listen to it as a group, writing down or drawing thoughts that come into our minds.

Then we’ll be given tasks and begin to form phrases that we share. These phrases will be manipulated by Raf to make solos, duets, trios, quartets or larger group sections. With Raf’s new work Ocho, there is a section where the dancers are confined to a small room. We’ve been improvising within the room to find images and ideas that form that part of the work.

Having trained in London and been surrounded by European dancers in my younger professional years, I’ve seen a noticeable difference in the way Australian dancers move. I often find Australian dancers to be full of strength, dynamics, passion and fire.

As cheesy as it sounds, my love for dance motivates me – nothing more.

See Petros in the world premiere of Orb from 29 April – 27 May in Sydney, Melbourne and Canberra.
