Inside Rafael Bonachela’s Frame of Mind

19 September 2018

First premiering more than three years ago,Rafael Bonachela‘s multi award-winning Frame of Mind gains a new life on stage in our latest, star-studded double bill Forever &Ever alongside a brand new work by Antony Hamilton.

A deeply personal piece, Frame of Mind features a contemporary-classical soundtrack by Bryce Dessner from Grammy Award winning band The National, which will be performed live on stage for the first time by the Australian String Quartet.

Ahead of the premiere, Rafael sat down with us to reflect on his inspirations behind the work:

“Frame of Mind was born from my own experience of wanting to be in two places at once. Both places were equally important to me. Whatever decision I made would not be able to satisfy the complexity of my desires, nor the needs of those around me.

As human beings, we are infinitely complex in our psychological states and the way we express ourselves emotionally and verbally are simple solutions to a much larger process. For cases of the heart, concrete communication becomes a way to structure our thoughts, but we must be careful not to leave behind the complex emotional information, which makes us who we are at any given moment.

Rafael Bonachela’s Frame of Mind was performed at the Roslyn Packer Theatre, Walsh Bay. Season Two 2019 features one of Rafael Bonachela’s award winning works: 6 Breaths. Tickets are on sale now
