The term contemporary ‘dance’ doesn’t begin to capture the incredible diversity of creative collaboration that goes into making a new Sydney Dance Company work. Composers and designers (set, costume and lighting) are constants, but Sydney Dance Company has always been at the vanguard of collaborating across disciplines, from filmmakers and technology designers, to musicians (Sarah Blasko) and fashion designers (Toni Maticevski, ).

2013 saw Sydney Dance Company dancers participate in an installation created by Jennifer Allora and Guillermo Calzadilla as part of the Kaldor Public Art Projects event 13 Rooms. In the space set up on Walsh Bay’s Pier 2/3, the dancers formed a barricade, drawing movement motifs from the human protest movement. 2015’s Inside There Falls for Sydney Festival took the Company into yet another realm, with artist Mira Calix collaborating with Rafael Bonachela on a work that combined music, voice and dance.
