Sydney Dance Company offer a variety of four and eight week courses for the adult (16 years +) dancer.
Our introductory courses for the beginner dancer are designed specifically for people who have never danced or have limited dance experience, these courses will teach foundation skills in the dance styles offered in the Adult Dance classes. It is recommended that the introduction short courses be taken prior to, or in conjunction with, attending the Beginner level drop in classes if you are completely new to the world of dance.

Introduction to Ballet: 4 weeks This course will give the adult dancer a basic but fundamental understanding of classical ballet technique. Designed to investigate and understand key elements of ballet; the course covers posture and correct alignment, positions of feet and arms, foot articulation, outward rotation (turn out) plies and simple sequencing, primarily at the barre. This course will focus on giving the participant a smooth and integrated progression to the Ballet Beginner class with a solid groundwork of the basics of Ballet technique.
Introduction to Ballet: 8 weeks For those who want an extended learning experience, this course enables you to develop a secure foundation technique and fundamental understanding of classical ballet technique over 8 weeks. Designed to investigate and understand key elements of ballet; the course covers posture and correct alignment, positions of feet and arms, foot articulation, outward rotation (turn out) plies and simple sequencing, primarily at the barre. You will develop your understanding of the terminology and technical requirements for Ballet and have the opportunity to focus on barre skills and work towards dance phrases in the centre of the room which will involve coordinating the full body in motion. This course will focus on giving the participant a smooth and integrated progression to the Ballet Beginner class with a solid groundwork of the basics of Ballet technique.
Introduction to Contemporary Dance: 4 weeks Contemporary dance encourages self-expression, natural movement and personal interpretation. This course will give the adult dancer a clear understanding of the foundations of contemporary dance. This includes the correct alignment of the body, the use of the spine, the articulation of joints, coordination, rolling and floor work, weight transfer, leg extensions and basic positions with the feet. Participants will acquire a better sense of their bodies, spatial awareness and a kinetic sense of moving through the space.
Introduction to Contemporary: 8 weeks This 8 week course will give the adult dancer an extended learning experience, and establishes a strong technique and understanding of Contemporary dance. Develop the foundations of contemporary dance, including the correct alignment of the body, the use of the spine, the articulation of joints, coordination, rolling and floor work, weight transfer, leg extensions and basic positions with the feet. Participants will acquire a better sense of their bodies, spatial awareness and a kinetic sense of moving through the space.
Introduction to Hip Hop Learn the basic moves and grooves fundamental to Hip Hop. Each class will consist of a warm up including stretches and body isolations. Break down the different techniques and then put them together into a short routine at the end of class. Perfect for those who have never danced before or just want to groove it out!
Introduction to Jazz Technique This course will give participants a clear understanding of the foundation of Jazz technique and focus on the technical skills needed for turns, jumps and kicks. This includes the correct alignment of the body, effective transferring of body weight and a better understanding of how the body works. Participants will also improve coordination, flexibility and correct technique. At the end of each class you will learn a simple dance routine incorporating the techniques learned that week.
Introduction to Latin Dance
Designed to introduce the various Latin dance styles and steps for the beginner dancer, this high energy class will teach you popular dances such as Salsa, ChaCha, Samba and Merengue. Learn the basic moves, styling and rhythms performed in these dances. Practice fun and easy to remember routines that you can use on the dance floor or at your favourite Zumba class. Introduction to Latin dance is perfect for those who have always wanted to learn basic Latin steps. No partner required.
Introduction to Lyrical Understand how lyrics can inform movement to create melodic and expressive dance. Over four weeks develop your skills in basic ballet and jazz technique. Be introduced to progressions and short combinations of movement. Participants will improve their musicality, improve body awareness and appreciate how to interpret song lyrics for dance. This course is recommended for anyone who loves to express themselves to music.
Introduction to Tap: 8 weeks
This course is designed to teach you the basics skills of tap dancing. In a friendly environment, you will develop a strong foundation of tap technique, musicality, terminology and learn classic tap combinations. If you have never taken a tap class before, this course will give you the confidence and skills to take that first shuffle.
Introduction to Theatre Jazz This course will introduce you to the classic dance style of Theatre Jazz, which first began on Broadway in the 1950s. Learn basic Jazz technique and short choreographed routines from Musicals. If you love Musicals such as A Chorus Line, Chicago, Cabaret and Sweet Charity then this is the course for you!
NEW: BALLET REPERTOIRE An exciting and challenging opportunity for the experienced dancer to learn and dance well-known classical repertoire. Perfect for the intermediate/advanced dancer who wants to extend their practice by learning choreography from classical Ballets such as Giselle, Swan Lake or The Nutcracker. This course will allow you to put your ballet class work into practice as you perform some of the iconic classical solos and corps de ballet repertoire from world renowned Ballets. Classes will begin with a short warm up at the barre followed by learning both solo and group work from a Classical Ballet. In the final four weeks a repetiteur will provide live piano music. In the final week feel free to invite friends and family to the last half hour of class to view an informal studio showing of the repertoire you have rehearsed. Dancers can decide whether or not to dance en pointe after consultation with the teacher.
Who are the courses for? Sydney Dance Company short introduction courses are for adults 16 years and over who have never danced or have limited dance experience. The Ballet Repertoire course is for advanced Ballet dancers who attend the Ballet Level 2 and 3 classes.
What do I wear? Wear casual dance wear, something that you already have and feel comfortable in eg. dance tights and top, leotard and tights with skirt or shorts over the top, track pants and t-shirt/singlet top. For Jazz and Hip Hop bring jazz shoes or sneakers, for Ballet and Lyrical ballet flats or cotton socks, for Tap bring tap shoes or wear leather soled shoes and for Contemporary cotton socks or dance bare foot.

What is the cancellation policy? We do not provide refunds or credits for change of mind or other personal circumstances. We can provide a credit note if the cancellation is due to a medical reason and the request is made prior to the course commencing. A medical certificate must be provided. If you miss a class, make up classes or refunds are not available.
