ORBIT Tour Dates
19 October – 22 November 2026
ORBIT 2026 is a new pilot touring program developed to address a critical gap in the Australian dance ecosystem: the absence of a sustainable touring model for small-to-medium scale independent dance works. Led by a consortium of Dancehouse (VIC), Sydney Dance Company (NSW), and Australian Dance Theatre (SA), ORBIT is built on the shared ambition to amplify and extend the life of existing independent works through strategic remounting and national presentation.
In 2026 ORBIT will present and tour four curated works. Each ORBIT tour offers a rich “whole night of dance” experience for audiences while providing independent choreographers the opportunity to remount and reintroduce significant works to new audiences.
ORBIT is designed for works that deserve more. This may be your greatest hit—a critically lauded or audience-adored work that only had a short life—or a standout piece from your body of work that never reached its touring potential. Whether it premiered last year or a decade ago, ORBIT is a platform for works that still have something to say, something to show, and somewhere else to go. We’re looking for powerful, polished, tour-ready works that have proven resonance and the potential to find fresh meaning and reach in 2026.

ORBIT has been assisted by the Australian Government through Creative Australia, its principal arts investment and advisory body and delivered in partnership by Australian Dance Theatre, Dancehouse and Sydney Dance Company.

This opportunity is only open to works that have premiered prior to the EOI closing date. ORBIT is NOT a commission, development or re-development opportunity.
No. We are very interested in working with lead artists / choreographers who want to submit a work that they would consider their “Greatest Hit” or a stand-out work that should have had more of a life, and want to revisit and re-contextualise that work for 2026.
If your work is 5, 10, 15 or 20 years old we encourage you to submit an EOI.
Please contact the ORBIT producer if you want to discuss your application. Michael Sieders - michaels@sydneydancecompany.com
Two works will be presented each week (across 2 weeks) in each venue, and you will share time in the venue with another artist/work during the remount and tour, i.e a 6.30pm show and an 8pm show
Yes, we require each work to be a stand-alone full-length piece, with a minimum duration of no less than 35 minutes.
If your work is shorter than this it will not be considered in the selection process.
Yes.
ORBIT is open to independent Australian dance artists and collectives.
One selected work in the program will be First Nations–led, and First Nations artists from anywhere in Australia are welcome to apply. Additionally, one work will be selected with lead creatives based in each of South Australia, New South Wales, and Victoria.
For the 2026 pilot year, ORBIT is open to First Nations–led works from across Australia.
Due to the pilot nature of the program, non–First Nations–led works outside of the core partner states of NSW, VIC and SA are not eligible in the pilot year of ORBIT.
ORBIT 2026 is being delivered as a pilot program by Australian Dance Theatre (SA), Dancehouse (VIC), and Sydney Dance Company (NSW) and supported by Creative Australia. While the program has a national vision, capacity and resources mean the eligibility is limited for this iteration. This approach allows the core partners to test the touring model effectively and build a strong foundation for potential future expansion.
No. This is an opportunity for the independent dance sector and does not involve any ORBIT core partners providing dancers. You will nominate your own performers for the season to be engaged for the project by the ORBIT core partners.
If you have any non-replaceable key creatives or performers, they must be confirmed prior to submitting your EOI.
It is advisable that your key creative team be made aware that you as lead artist / choreographer are intending to submit an EOI to ensure viability of remounting a work should your application be successful, but not mandatory to have definite confirmation at the time of submission.
Yes, each ORBIT tour is supported by the ORBIT Producer based at Sydney Dance Company, Production Stage Manager and Lighting realiser/operator. At each ORBIT venue, each season will be supported by venue technicians & crew appropriate to facilitate the seasons.
ORBIT is a presentation and touring opportunity and is not a development residency or commission.
The works selected will receive a licensing fee paid to the lead creative / Choreographer to remount the work. All performers that make up the touring party, which will include performers and crew, will be paid a weekly wage, per diem and have all travel and accommodation costs covered.
Yes, there is provision for one (lead artist/choreographer) to travel with the touring party to get their work up in each venue. They must be included in the maximum touring party of 5 if they are not performing in the work.
Each ORBIT partner organisation is primarily responsible for promoting all four works presented as part of the season at their venue. Promotion will include website listings, e-news, press interviews, and social media. Lead artists are expected to reasonably support this activity through the provision of content and engagement with the campaign. Each venue is responsible for selling all tickets, and retains 100% of box office income.
Yes by negotiation, if your work is not a recent production and you no longer have access to production elements or costumes, the ORBIT core partners will work with you to re-stage your work with new costumes or production elements within the allocated budget.
We can provide limited support for maintenance of existing elements, but we will work with you to determine your needs within budgetary constraints.
If your work is new and you have all original production elements and costumes you MUST provide all those materials.
We can provide limited support for maintenance of existing elements at our ORBIT core partner venues, but we will work with you to determine your needs within the budget available.
Yes.
Each ORBIT venue is different, able to achieve some things but may be limited in other areas. If your work is selected you may be asked to modify your work to suit all 3 core venues. This may include but is not limited to, performing a different colour tarkett, removing certain technical elements for the show or modifying the content to suit the venue.
If your work has NOT premiered as a full length piece by the 24 March 2026, your work is not eligible for ORBIT.
The full ORBIT program will take place from 19 October to 22 November 2026, for a total engagement of a minimum of 4 weeks.
2 productions will remount at Dancehouse in Melbourne the week commencing 19 October 2026.
2 Productions will remount at Sydney Dance Company the week commencing 26 October.
Each Production will tour to Sydney, Melbourne and Adelaide for 1 week in each city.
All ORBIT venues use an end-on seating configuration. If your work was originally staged in a different format (for example, in-the-round), it will need to be adaptable to this layout.
ORBIT 2026 is being delivered as a pilot program, supported by funding from Creative Australia. The 2026 pilot will allow the core partners to test the touring model, gather learnings, and assess the program’s impact on artists, audiences, and the independent dance sector. Any future iterations of ORBIT will be considered following evaluation of the 2026 program and subject to securing ongoing funding.
