Pre-Professional Year 2017 Auditions

A unique opportunity for aspiring professional dancers to attend a one-year nationally accredited course with one of Australia’s leading contemporary dance companies. Nationally recognised qualification, CUA50113 Diploma of Dance (Elite Performance), is delivered through an auspice arrangement with Australian Teachers of Dancing Limited (RTO 31624).

Sydney Dance Company’s Pre-Professional Year provides a unique opportunity for aspiring professional dancers to attend a one-year nationally accredited course with one of Australia’s leading contemporary dance companies.

Led by Course Director Linda Gamblin, the Pre-Professional program is designed to be rigorous, challenging and rich in practical skills development and professional career preparation while encouraging individualism and diversity. Students are provided with opportunities to explore the endless possibilities of contemporary dance, and fully immerse themselves into the role of a professional artist. Each student’s personal creative voice is embraced and nurtured, encouraging them to develop into reflective and forward-thinking dance artists.

The course reflects Sydney Dance Company’s calibre of technical expertise and artistic innovation. Students will work with some of Australia’s most renowned choreographers and dance educators with a major performance opportunity at the end of the year. Students will develop their technique, artistry and performance skills alongside Sydney Dance Company in a professional environment.

The Pre-Professional Year delivers a nationally recognised qualification, CUA50113 Diploma of Dance (Elite Performance) through an auspice arrangement with Australian Teachers of Dancing Limited (RTO 31624). As an approved course, you may be eligible to apply for Abstudy, Austudy or Youth Allowance.

The course will also provide students with invaluable networking opportunities with the artistic team from Sydney Dance Company, as well as leading Australian and international choreographers.

Students will study at Sydney Dance Company’s home, based in the stunning arts precinct at Walsh Bay and be exposed to the endless cultural and artistic experiences that Sydney has to offer.

Application closing date
Sunday 7 August (midnight). Applications are open to Australian and New Zealand citizens or permanent residents only.

Audition
The invitation-only audition will take place at Sydney Dance Company Studios on Sunday 4 September 2016. If you are invited to attend the audition you will be expected to make your own travel and accommodation arrangements. Applicants must complete the online application in order to be considered for an invitation to attend the ‘in person’ audition.

To be eligible to be selected to audition please ensure your application is complete using the checklist below:

Application Fee
You must complete the $55 application payment process BEFORE you complete the application form. Once you’ve made the payment you will receive an email with a Sale ID number. You will need to input this ID number in to the application form. Complete payment fee here.

Completed Application Form
To be filled in by the applicant and submitted online. A parent/guardian must submit applications for those under 18.

Video Footage
You will need to supply the links (YouTube, Vimeo, Dropbox or WeTransfer) to two (5 minutes maximum) videos, one Contemporary and one Classical Ballet. Each video should showcase your technical strengths, lines and extensions. Please keep in mind that the footage may not be watched past one minute so ensure your video showcases your ability within the timeframe. This video can be taken using your iPhone/smart phone and does NOT need to be edited to a professional standard. Wear form-fitting clothing (no costumes please) and film using natural lighting and a fixed camera position, which captures your entire body. You must be the only person dancing in the video. Preferably no performance footage unless it is a solo performance, close up and with good lighting.

Ensure you are familiar with the privacy settings of whichever video-sharing medium you choose as Sydney Dance Company does not have any control or authority over these mediums. These can be viewed via the following links – YouTube, Vimeo, Dropbox, WeTransfer.

NB: If your settings are for private viewing, please provide passwords for the relevant video links.

Do I need previous training in order to apply?
Yes. The Pre-Professional year – CUA50113 Diploma of Dance (Elite Performance) – is for dancers who have trained to a reasonably high level. If you are selected to attend the audition, you will need to demonstrate your skills in Ballet, Contemporary dance and Improvisation.

Can my video be considered as my audition if I am selected but cannot attend the audition in person?  Yes,  however we do require you to send a request email to fulltime@sydneydancecompany.com for this to be considered. Please take care to set all videos uploaded online to ‘private’ before sending us the link. Please include password. You can also send a DVD/USB if you are unable or don’t feel comfortable posting video online. Post DVD/USB to: Sydney Dance Company. Pier 4, 15 Hickson Rd, Walsh Bay NSW 2000.

What should I include on my video/DVD audition?

What happens to my DVD after the audition?
Your video links, DVD, USB and/or images will be disposed of appropriately to protect you privacy. However, if you wish to have DVD/USB  returned, please enclose a stamped addressed envelope with your application, and we will return it to you in February of 2017.

Who will see my audition DVD?
All submissions will be treated confidentially. Only members of the Sydney Dance Company Pre Professional Year audition selection panel will have access to view your material.

How will I know if I am selected to audition?
You will be notified by email if you receive a recall audition. Please ensure you check your spam/junk mail filters to ensure the email does not get lost.

What happens at the Audition?
The Audition is a practical audition which will take place at the Sydney Dance Company studios in Sydney on Sunday 4 September 2016. This audition is by invitation only. Applicants will be selected from their video submissions which are sent with their application (Due date for applications is 7 August 2016). In the audition, you will be guided through a class format to demonstrate your skills in Ballet, Contemporary dance and Improvisation.

Applicants will be responsible for all costs associated with attending the auditions, including travel and accommodation costs.

What should I wear to the audition?
 You should wear form fitting dance attire and appropriate footwear for ballet and contemporary work. There will be no time to change your outfit so please consider an appropriate choice. You will not be required to wear pointe shoes.

What time will my audition be?
There will be three different audition time slots on the day between the hours of 9am and 5 pm. You will be allocated one of the time slots (approximately 2 hours duration). We are unable to change the time of your audition so please make any necessary arrangements.

How long will the audition take?
Each audition will take approximately 2 hours.

Where will the audition be?
At the Sydney Dance Company studios, Pier 4, 15 Hickson Rd, Walsh Bay.

When will I find out if I receive a place?
All notifications and offers of placements will be sent by email to your nominated address within 6 weeks from the audition.

How many places are available on the course?
There are 26 positions available.

When is the course start date?
All students are required to be in Sydney for orientation startingthe course will commence on 30 January 2017.

Am I able to defer my start date if I am offered a place?
No. You must take up your placement in the year you are offered or decline your offer. You may re-audition the following year.

Can I get recognition for prior learning?
In order to be considered for recognised prior learning you must demonstrate that you are competent in the assessable (theoretical and practical) components of the course. However to be accepted into the course you must be available to all practical sessions and rehearsals scheduled in the course.

What are the entry requirements for the course?
You must successfully complete our audition process, confirm that you will be 18 years of age in 2017 and be prepared to commit to the full year of the course. In 2017, Sydney Dance Company will only accept Australian and New Zealand citizens or those who have permanent residency in Australia.
