International Tour

8 — 23 April 2016

Overview

In addition to 78 scheduled performances at 19 venues around Australia in 2016, Sydney Dance Company continues its strong tradition of international touring, showcasing Australian culture, ideas and talent on the global stage.

In April the Company will present at Switzerland’s prestigious Steps Festival, the country’s largest contemporary dance biennale, which showcases a selection of the world’s premier international dance companies, touring to venues across the nation for a four-week period. This tour sees Sydney Dance Company take on one of its most ambitious international presentations to date, staging the stunning triple bill, Interplay, which took east coast Australian audiences by storm in 2014.

Comprising works by Rafael Bonachela, renowned Australian choreographer Gideon Obarzanek, and Italy’s Jacopo Godani, (Artistic Director of the newly named Dresden-Frankfurt Dance Company, formerly the Forsythe Company), this is a diverse and high-energy program showcasing Australia’s premier contemporary dance ensemble at its poetic and athletic best.

From Europe, Sydney Dance Company will travel to South America – taking in Sao Paolo, Brazil and Santiago, Chile.

“A tour de force for the Company… go and see it yourselves. You won’t be disappointed.” – Limelight Magazine

Interplay is a stimulating, highly theatrical triple bill” – Daily Review

Raw Models is a full and accomplished piece of contemporary art in which the dancers come into their own; their faces gleam with animal-like hunger and intensity as their leotard-wrapped bodies erupt in movement – large, grotesque and divine.” – Dance Australia

“Rafael Bonachela takes on Bach’s Violin Partita No 2 in D Minor for an intellectually challenging engagement between movement and music; the second new piece, Gideon Obarzanek’s L’Chaim!, has heart and joy; and the revival of Jacopo Godani’s Raw Models well, that gives the libido a workout.” – The Australian

“4 stars…Raw Models is one of the most exciting dance pieces we’re likely to see in Melbourne this year.” – The Age

“Triple bills are all about variety and Sydney Dance Company’s Interplay has that in spades” – Sunday Herald Sun
