Biography

Born in Sydney, Ashley trained at the Australian Ballet School and Victorian College of Arts. In 2005 at age 17 she joined the Royal Ballet of Flanders Belgium under the direction of Kathryn Bennetts. In 2011 she moved on to work with Ballet Opera de Lyon, France. Ashley has worked throughout this time with numerous renowned choreographers; Jirí Kylián, William Forsythe, Mats Ek, Anne Teresa de Keersmaeker, Maguy Marin and has been involved in creations by David Dawson, Jacopo Godani, Christian Rizzo, Rachid Ouramdane, Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui, Gary Stewart.

Better Left Unsaid created in 2009 for the Royal Ballet of Flanders, won 2nd prize and Audience Choice Award at the Copenhagen International Choreographic Competition. Her second work Ominous Parallels, featured in the 2010 Interdans Festival, Belgium. In 2011 she created Knee Deep Sleep for the Royal Ballet of Flanders, reworked in 2012 to become a finalist at the International Choreographic Competition, Hannover.

In 2014 she was nominated as a finalist in the prestigious Rolex Mentor and Protégé Arts Initiative program, choreographic section. May 2015 saw the World Premiere of The Elephant has left, This Room. a new creation for Ballet l’Opera de Lyon. Later that year she began freelancing as both dancer and choreographer, basing herself in Berlin, Germany. In July 2015 she joined project company Emanuel Gat Dance with whom she tours widely.

The work May Contain Traces Of. a duet collaboration with dancer and composer Tadayoshi Kokeguchi was created in May 2016 commissioned and produced by Les Subsistances for the “Livraisons d’été” festival. VWA, between Ashley Wright & Harris Gkekas together with drummer and electronic composer Didier Ambact. premiered October 2016 Theatre Le Croiseur as part of La Biennale de la Danse, Lyon.

Because it isn’t going to come to a beginning premiered at the TANZ Theater INTERNATIONAL Festival Hannover, Germany as part of the annual THINK BIG Residency.

In 2018 Ashley worked alongside French film director Christophe Honoré for L’Opera de Lyon world premiere production of Don Carlos. ‘Ten people in the shape of a Lemming’ her most recent work was created for Austinmer Dance Theatre in May this year and featured at both the Sydney and Melbourne Fringe festivals.
