Twelve-year-old Samantha has been coming to our School Holiday Workshops for the past four years. She loves the challenging and stimulating environment of our classes and dreams of becoming a dance teacher in the future.

We sat down with her while she was at the Contemporary, Lyrical, JFH and Theatre Jazz workshop to talk about what she learned and her favourite dance styles.

Young people can join in the fun at our Summer Holiday Workshops in Ultimo and Bondi from 2 – 24 January 2020. Book by Friday 13 December to receive a 10% early bird discount.

Q. When did you start dancing?

I started dancing when I was two years old. I did tap and ballet. I’ve danced as long as I can remember and I’ve always just loved it.

Q. What do you love about dance?

I love how I can express my emotions in the music and how I can perform in front of people and they can feel happy because of it.

Q. Which dance styles have you enjoyed most in the workshop holidays?

I have two favourites. I love Theatre Jazz because it’s really a showcase of acting as well as dancing, which I love when performing in front of an audience. I love Lyrical because it was very sharp and then soft in other places – that dynamic was really cool.

Q. What tasks and exercises have you been doing in the workshop?

In Theatre Jazz we did a warm up and then we did exercises such as kicks and turns in small lines.

Q. How long have you been coming to Sydney Dance Company's school holiday workshops?

I’ve been coming for four years, since I was in Year Three. I really like how I can be challenged here in these workshops.

Q. What challenging aspects do you enjoy in these workshops?

People can bring you forward a bit more because there’s lots of different age groups and everyone has amazing talent in all of them. I like the challenge.

Q. Is there one piece of advice a teacher has given you in the workshop that has helped you in your dancing?

Yes. That you need to think about the music and what the music is showing you, and then you can act upon it the way that you feel.

Q. What do you love most about Sydney Dance Company school holiday workshops?

I think it’s the atmosphere and how all the teachers are amazing choreographers. The atmosphere is so cool. I just love the feeling of the whole thing.

Q. What are your future plans for dance?

I dream about being a dance teacher, whether at Sydney Dance Company or another dance school. I love teaching and children and helping them out. I think dance would be an amazing way to showcase that and help everyone.

Our school holiday programs provide an exciting and focused environment for young people to experience dance.

Don’t forget that we are a Creative Kids provider which enables parents, guardians and carers to claim a $100 voucher to put towards the cost of the workshops. Apply now.
