Sydney Dance Company Associate Artist Fiona Jopp is part of the teaching team taking our Contemporary Masterclass on Friday 27 January. This masterclass is for experienced dancers such as vocational students and pre-professionals who want to extend their technique, explore creativity through task work, and learn a piece of Artistic Director Rafael Bonachela’s acclaimed choreography.

Fiona recently performed in Nude Live at the Art Gallery of NSW for the Sydney Festival, and will appear in Crazy Times at the Sydney Opera House from 14-18 March 2017. In this interview, Fiona discusses how she started dancing and what students will learn in the masterclass.

When and why did you start dancing?

I started as a tiny tot three-year-old ballerina. My mother recognised the performer in me at an early age and took me to ballet classes.

What do you love about Contemporary dance?

Contemporary dance is creative, challenging and liberating.

What will students learn in the masterclass?

Student will get a taste of a day as a contemporary dancer. The day starts with a class, ballet or contemporary technique, perhaps yoga, creative tasking, then learning and refining repertoire.

What is one piece of advice you’ve received that influenced your dancing?

You’re never dancing alone.

You’ll be teaching students a piece of Rafael Bonachela's 'Lux Tenebris'. What can students expect?
Getting down and grungy, great musicality and a whole lot of cardio.
