My first week in the Pre-Professional Year

Pre-Professional Year student Leah Marojevic reflects on her first week in our Pre-Professional course:

I have so thoroughly enjoyed my first week with Sydney Dance Company’s Pre-Professional Year. It has been a full and varied start, a taste of the pace of learning to come.

We have been introduced to so many new teachers, each who teach with a refreshing and valuable perspective. They each possess a great deal of positivity and time to be individually nurturing, creating a safe zone for learning.

In this first week we have had an intensive with Iratxe Ansa. Her incredible, vast background was so evident through her teaching and greatly inspired me particularly in the way she thinks about movement and the body and her cerebral approach to improvisation. We learnt an excerpt from one of her solos and this was performed in a studio showing at the end of the week, a great way to feel comfortable regularly performing as well as seeing the excitement of the rest of Sydney Dance Company for the Pre-Professional Year.

During this week we also had the opportunity to observe the Company dancers in rehearsal for their performances coming up. It’s always extremely motivating to see the continual hard work of the dancers and gain an insight into the rehearsal processes of a professional work.

I am so very looking forward to learning from all the other exciting artists who we will be able to meet through the rest of this year, and see the development of the Class of 2014 Pre-Professional Year’s artistry.
