Tap & Jazz for 55+

Our Seniors class is especially for ages 55 and over. The classes consist of two weeks of Tap and then two weeks of Jazz on a rotating basis. The Tap class is with Tracey Wilson and the Jazz class is with Zac Jaffar.

Jazz for 55+

This Jazz class is especially for ages 55 and over!

Start with exercises at the Ballet barre and then progressions across the floor. Learn a short Jazz routine to Broadway tunes and Jazz classics.

Due to capped classes, participants must pre-book this class to guarantee a place.

Our senior classes require no experience for the Jazz class. However, if you have never done any Tap before you may find the class quite challenging.

We understand that tap shoes are an investment. We suggest leather soled shoes ideally as an alternative with a slight heel if you are trying for the first time. Once you have decided to come regularly, we do recommend purchasing Tap shoes.

Yes, this class is for those over 55. People of all ages are very welcome to attend any of our other drop in dance classes.

Designed specifically if you’ve never danced before or have limited experience, these courses will teach you the foundation skills you need to succeed and get the most from our adult dance classes.

Introduction to Ballet: 4 weeks
Fee: $110 for 4 classes

This 4 week introductory course to ballet will give the adult dancer a basic but fundamental understanding of classical ballet technique. The class is designed to investigate and understand key elements of ballet; including posture and correct alignment, positions of feet and arms, foot articulation, outward rotation (turn out) plies and simple sequencing – primarily at the barre.

This course will focus on giving the participant a smooth and integrated progression to the Ballet Beginner class with a solid groundwork of the basics of ballet technique.

It is recommended that this course be taken prior to, or in conjunction with, attending the Ballet Beginner class if you are new to the world of Ballet.

Introduction to Ballet: 8 weeks
Fee: $210 for 8 classes

For those who want an extended learning experience, this course enables you to develop a secure foundation technique and fundamental understanding of classical ballet technique over 8 weeks. Designed to investigate and understand key elements of ballet, the course covers posture and correct alignment, positions of feet and arms, foot articulation, outward rotation
(turn out) plies and simple sequencing, primarily at the barre.

You will develop your understanding of the terminology and technical requirements for Ballet and have the opportunity to focus on barre skills and work towards dance phrases in the centre of the room which will involve coordinating the full body in motion. This course will focus on giving the participant a smooth and integrated progression to the Ballet Beginner class with a solid groundwork of the basics of Ballet technique.

In a friendly environment, you will develop a strong foundation of tap technique, musicality, terminology and learn classic tap combinations.If you have never taken a tap class before, then this is the course for you!

Tap shoes are preferred, but not necessary. Flat, closed in shoes with a leather or vinyl sole will do.

Introduction to Tap: 8 weeks
Fee: $210 for 8 classes

Introduction to Jazz Technique
Fee: $110 for 4 classes

Location:Wharf 4/5, 15 Hickson Road, Dawes Point, 2000
This introductory course that will give participants a clear understanding of the foundation of Jazz technique. The course will focus on the technical skills needed for turns, jumps and kicks. This includes the correct alignment of the body, effective transferring of body weight and a better understanding of how the body works. Participants will also improve coordination, flexibility and correct technique. At the end of each class you will learn a simple dance routine incorporating the techniques learned that week.

Sydney Dance Company’s short introduction courses are for adults 16 years and over who have never danced or have limited dance experience.

Wear casual dance wear, something that you already have and feel comfortable in E.G. Dance tights and top, leotard and tights with skirt or shorts over the top, track pants and t-shirt/singlet top. For Jazz and Hip Hop bring jazz shoes or sneakers and for Contemporary and Lyrical bring ballet flats or cotton socks, or dance bare foot.

We do not provide refunds or credits for change of mind or other personal circumstances. We can provide a credit note if the cancellation is due to a medical reason and a medical certificate is provided. Please note: there are no makeup classes, credit notes or refunds for missed sessions.

Do I need to be double vaccinated to attend an Adult Short Course?
No. As of 11 March 2022, proof of vaccination (or medical exemption) is no longer required to enter the Wharf Studios.

What do I do if I have any of the following symptoms: cough, fever, sore throat, shortness of breath or have been in contact with another person who has recently tested positive for COVID-19?
Please do not come to the Studios. Get tested, wait for a negative result and adhere to any self-isolation guidelines from the NSW Government before you return to the Studios.

Dance classes can involve risk of personal injury. While Sydney Dance Company takes all reasonable care in the conduct of its classes, it accepts no responsibility for injury or loss caused during classes or whilst participants are at or near the dance studio. You are responsible for ensuring that you are physically and medically fit for the class and during the class you must at all times take care of your own personal safety. If an advertised teacher is suddenly unavailable, due to circumstances beyond our control, a replacement teacher with similar attributes and qualifications will be employed.

To subscribe, follow these steps:

2. Choose an ongoing monthly, quarterly or annual Classes On Demand subscription and follow the prompts to make a purchase.

3. After you select “Check Out” you will need to create a new Mindbody account or sign in to an existing one. Make sure to opt-in to emails and texts to stay up to date and receive exclusive offers!

4. Finalise your payment.

5. Select the “Classes On Demand” tab and sign in using your Mindbody login details.

Classes On Demand is just like a Netflix subscription - you pay an ongoing subscription fee and get unlimited access to our library of pre-recorded classes.

Your Classes on Demand subscription renews automatically each month, quarter or year depending on your subscription type.

There is no lock in period, but if you wish to cancel your subscription please email [email protected] with your Cancellation Notice at least 72 hours before your next payment is due. Please note: You will not be eligible for any credit or refund for unused access.

Alternatively, go to the Mindbody website and select “Terminate” on your Classes On Demand subscription. Please note: If you choose this option your access to the Classes On Demand platform will end immediately and you will not be eligible for any credit or refund of unused access.

You can suspend your subscription for a minimum of two consecutive weeks, and in fortnightly blocks thereafter up to a maximum of 12 weeks. You may do this twice within a 12-month period and not be charged a fee. You cannot suspend your subscription in the first month. To suspend your subscription, email [email protected].

Once you have subscribed, you can watch Classes On Demand via a web browser or through the Sydney Dance Company App on iOS or Android.

How do I know if a class is right for me? Each class specifies a level indicating its relative difficulty. If you are concerned about the level, please begin with a lower-level class as a warm-up and then try a higher-level class the next time, if you feel you are able to.

What is the average age of students in the class?
Sydney Dance Company Classes On Demand is for people 16 years and over. Children and young people under 16 years of age can join if a parent/guardian participates in the class with them.   

Do you have classes for older people?  
Many of the Classes On Demand classes are suitable for mature age students. Please ensure you work within your own comfort level, and do not do any moves that feel uncomfortable.
