Air and Other Invisible Forces

Graeme Murphy's Air and other invisible forces premiered at the Sydney Opera House in September 1999. The production has since toured to major Australian cities and to the United States. In November 2000, Air and other invisible forces was staged at The Joyce Theater in New York for six critically acclaimed sell-out performances.

Essentially non-narrative, Air and other invisible forces draws its inspiration from music by Australian composer Michael Askill and Georgian composer Giya Kancheli, whose liturgy Mourned by the Wind informs the second half of the work. Askill's score, Invisible Forces, is performed live onstage by shakuhachi Grand Master Riley Lee and percussionist Michael Askill.

The production was designed by Australian artist Gerard Manion. Costumes were created by the award winning fashion designer Akira Isogawa, following the outstanding success of his first stage designs for Graeme Murphy's Salome in 1998. Lighting is by Damien Cooper.
