Chen Wen was born in China and studied dance at the PLA Arts Academy’s Dance School from 1995-2000. In 2000, he was a principal dancer with the Red Star Dance Company, touring to seven European countries. Later that year he joined the Ji’nan Frontier Song and Dance Ensemble as a principal dancer, where he remained until 2003. In 2004, he joined the Shanghai Song and Dance Ensemble, again as a principal dancer.
In 2005, when Graeme Murphy created Hua Mulan, an historic collaboration between Sydney Dance Company and the Shanghai Song and Dance Ensemble to premiere at the Shanghai International Festival. Chen Wen was cast in the role of as Mulan’s Companion. Subsequently, his outstanding talent saw him invited to join Sydney Dance Company. He came to Australia in January, 2007, soon after he made his Company debut on tour to nine cities in the United States.. Since that time Chen Wen has danced in Graeme Murphy’s, Grand, ,Ever After Ever, Berlin, Short Stories and Stephen Petronio’s Underland. In 2008/2009 Chen Wen danced in Rafael Bonachela’s 360°, Aszure Barton’s Sid’s Waltzing Masquerade, Meryl Tankard’s INUK2, Rafael Bonachela’s we unfold and in the New Breed season of new works at the Sydney Opera House Spring Dance Festival.
Chen Wen has been the recipient of several awards in China including a choreographic prize at the 3rd Lotus Awards- National Dance Competition in 2003.
