Biography

Born in Melbourne, Cass trained at the Australian Ballet School and performed with the West Australian Ballet from 2006–2009. While there, he choreographed several dance works that were performed nationally. In 2010, Cass became co-director of the Australian dance/media company, Ludwig, where he created many works and won awards including ‘Most Outstanding Performance at the 2011 Rome International Choreography Competition’ for his short work, ‘Solo 1.5’. This work was also presented at the renowned ImPulsTanz Festival, Vienna in the same year. In 2012 he won the 3rd prize at the Stuttgart International Dance Festival, where he performed Emma Sandall’s ‘Body Song’. In 2013, he won the prize for ‘Most Outstanding Choreography’ at the West Australian Dance Awards for the work ‘Fleck & Flecker.’

Cass joined Sydney Dance Company in January 2013 and won the 2015 Helpmann Award for ‘Best Male Dancer’ in William Forsythe’s ‘Quintett.’ He created three works for Sydney Dance Company, including their 2015 collaboration with the Sydney Symphony Orchestra’s, ‘Le Grand Tango.’ He has also created for ‘Link Dance Company’ and ‘So You Think You Can Dance Australia’, and has collaborated on music clips with Katie Noonan and Ben Folds. He recently created his new Dance Film, ‘Brute,’ on the Queensland Ballet, which will premiere at the Brisbane Powerhouse in November, 2018.
